Program Description
The Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical Care is a research and program development unit within the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. The fundamental purpose of the Institute is to advance pharmaceutical care, a patient-centered practice in which the practitioner assumes responsibility for a patient’s drug-related needs and is held accountable for that commitment. The Peters Institute is dedicated to the belief that rational medication use is an essential component of health care, and that a practitioner at the patient-specific level of practice is necessary to assure the appropriate, effective, safe, and convenient use of drug therapy.
To this end, the Peters Institute develops educational programs to disseminate pharmaceutical care practice to students and practitioners and conducts research to evaluate the practice and the educational efforts to support it. In order to continue to broaden the impact of pharmaceutical care practice in Minnesota, improve the health of patients, and encourage rational medication use, the Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical care announces a research program that will award grants up to $10,000 each for projects to be initiated beginning in January of 2008.
These research projects will:
- stimulate the development of new pharmaceutical care practices
- evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical care practices
- improve the ability to meet the drug-related needs of patients.
Funding Guidelines
The Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical care is requesting applications for development grants to fund faculty research. It is expected that we will support three to five projects, with each project budgeted for up to $10,000 per year. Principal investigators will be regular faculty members of the College of Pharmacy or term faculty members of the College of Pharmacy with at least 50% COP funding. Preference will be given to proposals submitted by junior faculty. Collaboration with community-based pharmaceutical care practitioners, graduate students, and other health care practitioners is encouraged as are research projects related to practice development and/or evaluation with a plan for future external funding. Grant applications will be reviewed by the Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical Care Governance Board.
Budget Parameters
Research projects should be no more than two years in length with a budget $10,000 per year. Funding will be available January 1, 2008
Ongoing support beyond the initial project budget must be secured from other sources.
No faculty salary offset can be supported with these funds.
Funds may not be used to pay for individual patient care services (lab tests, patient care fees).
Application Process
College of Pharmacy faculty members who are interested in submitting proposals must provide the following:
- A one-page summary of the project including its rationale and potential impact on pharmaceutical care practice. Please include descriptions of the study hypothesis and/or question as well as any background information or necessary references.
- A description of your research goals and objectives
- A research plan that shows how you plan to meet your objectives
- An evaluation plan to determine the impact of the project, i.e. How will you know you have achieved your goals?
- A timeline for the project
- How these funds will help the project move forward and the potential of outside funding to sustain the project. Identify other sources of research support and, when appropriate, explain how the proposed project relates to other funded projects.
- A complete budget, identifying how funds will be spent and how each expenditure relates to the project.
Applications should not exceed 5 pages, not including cover page, using Times Roman 12 point with standard margins. All applications must include a cover page with the following information listed: Title of grant, names of PI and co-PI(s), highest degree(s), academic titles of PI and co-PI(s), contact information (including campus mailing address) for PI, college of PI and co-PI, as well as the total amount requested. Clearly identify the investigator to receive all correspondence (the “contact PI”).
A faculty member may apply for only one grant per cycle on which he/she would be the PI or co-PI. There is no limitation to the number of grants on which a faculty member would participate as an investigator or other role.
Application Deadline
Applications for the Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical Care Research Program will be due December 1, 2007 for funding to begin January 1, 2008.
Reporting Requirements
Successful applicants will be expected to submit a brief written progress report by December 1 of each year detailing: (1). project findings to date, (2). presentations and/or publications resulting from the project, (3.) strategies for securing additional funding.
A final report is due no later than 6 months after the end of the funding period.
