The Center for Excellence in Critical Care is an interdisciplinary Center of the Academic Health Center of the University of Minnesota. Complementing the expertise of Center faculty are the vast knowledge base, technology and laboratories, and resources of the Academic Health Center.
The Academic Health Center is comprised of:
Seven Schools and Colleges: College of Pharmacy, College of Veterinary Medicine, Medical School, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine-Duluth, School of Nursing, School of Public Health
Allied Health Programs: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Medical Technology, Health Informatics, Mortuary Science
Interdisciplinary Efforts: Cancer Center, Biomedical Engineering Institute, Biomedical Genomics Center, Center for Bioethics
The Academic Health Center:
- educates 70 percent of Minnesota’s health care professionals creating a network for studies and education.
- drives, as an economic engine, Minnesota’s leading industry, health care services and products, including 7,000 businesses.
- brings in $180 million in sponsored research funds every year through the work of its researchers.
- develops health technologies independently and in collaboration with Minnesota biomedical companies.
Minnesotans pride themselves on the quality of health care in the area. Minnesota is ranked as the "Most Livable State," a ranking which includes healthcare. The atmosphere breeds innovation and research and the Academic Health Center is at the heart.
The vision for the Academic Health Center, approved by the Board of Regents in July of 2000, included "developing cutting-edge knowledge driven by excellence with adequate space and equipment. It requires cutting out the time and recourses to perform research, particularly by clinician scientists and scholars. And we’re committed to maintaining our heritage of fostering the state’s economy with innovation, serving as an objective source of information and disseminating new knowledge through outreach, technical assistance and advocacy.
Affiliated Facilities:
Relationships have been established between the faculty of the Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Collaborative research is common.
Affiliated Hospitals:
The hospital facilities of the Center for Excellence in Critical Care include the two hospitals of the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. The Riverside campus is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River at 2450 Riverside Avenue and the University campus is located on the east bank at 420 Delaware Street SE. The Center for Excellence in Critical Care office is housed within the College of Pharmacy in Weaver-Densford Hall on the east bank campus of the University of Minnesota, within easy walking distance of the University campus hospital.
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview Intensive Care Units:
Medical Intensive Care Unit: a 13-bed unit located on the University campus with medical specialists on staff as well as specialists from throughout the Fairview-University Medical Center system available for consultation.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: 25-bed unit located on the Riverside campus with neonatologists, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, residents and interns on staff as well as specialists available from throughout the Fairview-University Medical Center system available for consultation.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: Surgical Intensive Care Unit: 21-bed unit located on the University campus with surgeons, cardiologists and anesthesiologists, residents and fellows on staff as well as specialists available from throughout the Fairview-University Medical Center system available for consultation.
